On the occasion of Children’s Day, Community Gyan Lab spent a day with underprivileged school-going kids from the slum areas around LR Nagar in Bangalore. Over hundred kids aged between eight and twelve years gathered at Sacred Heart Boys’ High School along with six volunteers from Global Concerns, an NGO based in Viveknagar. They were led commendably by Mrs. Brinda, Mrs. Zeena and Mrs. Maria.
Overall, it was a day of fun and learning for the kids as well for our folks from Community Gyan Lab. “The enthusiasm shown by the kids was very encouraging. But the image I’ll never forget is probably the expressions of delight on the kids’ faces when their models worked”, says Srishti Punja, Senior Manager at Gyan Lab. Indeed, the energy and excitement displayed by the kids raised the morale of our staff to new heights.
All in all, we gave away fifty kits that covered DIY activities for kids from third to seventh grades, including the spectacular ‘Make Your Own Volcano’ and informative ‘Electricity from Solar Energy’ kits. We also gave away a special gift – a DIY Remote Control Car and Battle Tank – to Global Concerns for being such an enterprising NGO. We also distributed juice and snacks among the kids as well as sponsored their travel as a moral obligation.
With events like these, Community Gyan Lab hopes to ignite the spark of curiosity in students of low-income schools which will drive towards excellence and enable them to do well for themselves as they progress through school.
